The month prior:

  • Perform an address change with the Post Office to ensure you get your mail!
  • Research and secure a moving company - Our Resources!
  • Move all of your memberships as necessary.
  • If switching your primary care physician or dentist, get all of your records transferred.
  • Set up a checking account in your new city.
  • Look into any other state requirements - permits, licenses, etc. to ensure that when you move, you don't lose what you've worked for.
  • Organize your belongings by making a detailed list of your more expensive valuables. Don't wait untill the last week to begin packing, the sooner you start, the better of you'll be. - Check out our supplies!
  • Figure out how you are going to Move your pets.
  • Where applicable, set up appointments with painters, electricians, construction workers or other service professionals. It will take much less time and save you money if they work in an empty house
  • Buy foods that can be consumed or transferred so that they do not spoil.

A Few Weeks Before

  • Notify all of your utilities companies of your new address - including phone, cable, gas, electric, water/sewer, trash.
  • Cash in on all those favors and get help on moving day!
  • Did you get those plane/train tickets? Make sure you have your documents in order!
  • Begin cleaning all of those items that you want transported, because you'll never clean them when you get there!
  • Make the necessary arrangements with all of your financial institutions (credit card companies, banks, 401k & retirement accounts)
  • Take all valuable papers or items and buy a safe! Temporarily store that safe at a family member's house or friend's house!

A Few Days Before

  • Defrost freezer and refrigerator. Place deodorizer inside to control odors.
  • Give all of your relelvant information to your trusted friends or family members - including cell phone, route, confirmations numbers, itinerary, etc. so that you may be reached during your move at any time.
  • On Moving Day
  • Confirm your closing appointment and financial documents are in order (especially the mortgage company) to ensure that your closing will go smoothly!
  • If you haven't packed all of your frequently used items, now's the time! You don;t want to wait until last minute to pack.

Moving Day Is Here!

  • Perform a final walkthrough similar to what you do when leaving a hotel room. Check all nooks for items missed, we bet you'll find something!
  • If you are carrying any valuable documents, keep them with you at all times! Remember that safe? Bet you could use it now!
  • Carry enough by way of disposable funds in case of emergency!
  • Make sure you find a way to thank all of those Free Helpers! Maybe even the hired ones! A few extra bucks or a free lunchj will go a long way to their care for your valuables!

Finally, you're moved in!

  • Update anything that you could not update prior to the move to reflect the new address!
  • Take a tour of your new surroundings! Usually the first thing the newly moved do is take time to work on their new home. Be sure to get a lay of the land! Any idea where the hospital is?
  • Any repairs or work need to be done? You probably want to sand/paint/scrub before you unpack and unwrap all of your stuff! Now is the time!

Tips on Moving - Moving Companies

Research Your Movers!

One of the most important things you can do is to take the time necessary to look into the people moving your home...

  • Make sure that if you are agreeing to a price, that there is nothing in the fine print that could cause them to ding you should they go over time!
  • Check to see if gratuity is covered in the cost.
  • Get a contract, read all of the details and make sure all coverages are listed!
  • Check into their record...for example have they listed any of their references?
  • Have you verified what happens should anything major be damaged during the move?
  • Watch the loading and unloading process so they understand you are cautious and careful about your move!

We wish you the best on moving into your new home or apartment. Hopefully the entire process works out well for you. Afterall, we at Pro Moving Boxes really do care about our consumers and their valuables!
